Further to an invitation that was extended to us, the leadership of the Patriots for Economic Progress PeP this morning held a meeting with the Ministry of General Education as well as the Teaching Council of Zambia, from around hrs to hrs, to look into the issue in which job applicants for teacher positions were being charged an application fee of K At the meeting, the Ministry of General Ed Ebby Mubanga.
The meeting was very amicable and fruitful as we managed to discuss a wide range of issues affecting the education sector. The Patriots for Economic Progress is pleased with the efforts that are being made by the Ministry of General Education as well as the Teaching Council of Zambia to try and improve the quality of education in the country as well as to regulate and monitor the quality of teachers that tutor our children.
Regarding the main agenda item of the meeting, the Patriots for Economic Progress supports the concept that all those practicing as teachers need to be registered as such with the Teaching Council of Zambia and that such individuals must also hold a valid certificate to practice as teachers in Zambia, whether in public or in private schools.
However, the Patriots for Economic Progress is still strongly opposed to the decision by the Ministry of General Education to use the issue of registration with TCZ as a precondition for someone to apply for a job as a teacher.
What MoGE should have done is to compel successful applicants to subsequently register with TCZ as a precondition to be employed, because only a successful applicant can practice as a teacher. It must be noted that section 26 subsection 1 a of the Teaching Profession Act number 5 of only requires those that are practicing as teachers to b. The Teaching Council of Zambia is concerned with some comments being expressed by some stakeholders in society over the recent teacher recruitment.
